ICMR-NIMR Field Unit (FU) Raipur is situated at one of the highly malaria-endemic states of India, Chhattisgarh. The FU was inaugurated on April 2, 2006, by Dr. K. Bandhi, Hon’ble Minister for H&FW, Government of Chhattisgarh in the presence of Prof. N.K. Ganguly, DG ICMR; Prof. A.P. Dash, Director NIMR, Director Health Services, Govt. of CG & other dignitaries. Since inception, FU is involved in various research and scientific activities for malaria control in Chhattisgarh.
ICMR-NIMR has carried out malaria vector bionomics and epidemiological studies in Chhattisgarh. Plasmodium falciparum is the predominant parasite for malaria in the area. An. Culicifacies is the main vector for malaria transmission in the tribal areas of Chhattisgarh. ICMR-NIMR has carried out the insecticide resistance study in all the 27 districts of Chhattisgarh. FU executes the field evaluation of LLINs, larvicidals, therapeutic efficacy of antimalarials in Chhattisgarh. FU has also done the evaluation of malaria diagnostic methods, Loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) and rapid diagnostic kits (RDT) at Chhattisgarh.
The FU works in close association with NVBDCP Chhattisgarh. All the research activities of the field unit are intended to strengthen the intervention operations of the local health authorities by providing necessary scientific inputs. The FU also provides technical support to the programme in various aspects. The FU also provides training to Lab Technicians and District VBD consultants from the state health department. The FU also provides orientation training to medical students from different medical colleges. The FU also carries out the situation analysis and outbreak investigation for malaria in the state, as per requirement. The research activities are executed in close collaboration and with the coordination of Directorate of Health & Family Welfare, Government of Chhattisgarh, India.
