Bengaluru Field Unit was established in October 1992 mainly to demonstrate bioenvironmental malaria control strategy in Karnataka using different approaches in different eco-epidemiological settings and facilitate basic, operational and applied research activities of NIMR. In early 90s, malaria was a major public health problem in most parts of the state and the states’ contribution ranged from 7-10% of the total malaria cases reported in the country. The main mandate of the field unit is to demonstrate and suggest a suitable and appropriate malaria control strategy in different eco-epidemiological settings, to conduct basic, applied and operational research on malaria ; to provide technical support and capacity building of the State Health department staff in entomology and epidemiology; to evaluate new insecticides -indoor residual sprays and larvicides; efficacy testing of new intervention tools such as ITNs, ITCs and LLINs; efficacy testing of new drugs, diagnostic kits and new methods for diagnosis and treatment of malaria and to provide technical support to local health department in vector borne diseases control.
With the help of State Health Department, ICMR-NIMRFU successfully demonstrated bioenvironmental control of malaria in Tumkur, Kolar, Hassan, Chikmagalur, Mandya, Mysore, Kalaburgi, Raichur, Gadag, Yadgir, Mangalore, Chitradurga, Viajayapura, Bagalkot, etc. Many insecticide and LLIN trials were undertaken in different parts of the state. Stratification of Karanataka based on sibling species prevalence, vector distribution of Anopheles culicifacies and An. fluviatilis was undertaken. Now in many districts, malaria situation is under control. Apart from vector control activities, ICMR-NIMRFU also undertook evaluation of new drugs, diagnostic kits, clinical trials of antimalarials, etc.
